Meet Kara Herrera

Kara has been a Physician Assistant at Austin Gastroenterology since 2001 and has had the privilege of working alongside Dr. Ellis since 2010. Originally from Fort Worth, she moved to Austin to earn her undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Texas. She went on to complete her Physician Assistant training at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, graduating with high honors. Prior to working as a PA, she was employed as a clinical laboratory assistant at a hospital in Fort Worth and also worked for the Texas Medical Association.

She is Certified by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants and licensed by the Texas Medical Board. She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Associates, the Texas Academy of Physician Assistants, and the Central Texas Physician Assistant Society. Her professional philosophy centers on providing individualized care for each patient through collaboration, continuous learning, and strong patient advocacy. She values the dynamic nature of the PA profession, which brings both challenges and rewards, and she is committed to staying current in this ever-evolving field.

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and children, especially attending their sporting and school events. She also loves spending time with her extended family and making memories.  She is an avid Longhorn fan, particularly when it comes to football! Hook ’em! She also enjoys jogging, outdoor walks/hikes, and baking sweet treats.
