Texas Senate Bill 1467

Enacted in 2001, Texas Senate Bill 1467 allows many persons ages 50 or older to receive a free screening for the detection of colorectal cancer. Individuals whose insurance plan covers this benefit may choose:

  • A fecal occult blood test performed annually, and a diagnostic flexible sigmoidoscopy performed every five (5) years, or
  • A screening colonoscopy performed every 10 years.

Senate Bill 1467 does not cover patients with ERISA plans, Medicare, Medicare+Choice, Medicaid, workers’ compensation products, or small employer plans written under Chapter 26 of the Texas Insurance Code. Contact your insurance provider to see if you’re eligible for this free screening.

Referrals

If your insurance is an HMO/managed care plan and you are required to obtain a referral from your primary care physician, the referral must be obtained before you can be seen for an office visit. Please coordinate this with your primary care physician in advance. Appointments will be rescheduled if required referrals are not received in the office by the time of your visit.

No Show/Late Cancellations

Please notify us within 24 hours of an office visit or 72 hours of a procedure if you need to cancel your appointment. Otherwise, a fee of $25 or $100 will be applied to your account, and the charge must be paid prior to your next appointment.

Prescription Requests

Prescriptions and refills for established patients of Austin Gastroenterology are routinely issued during our regular office hours (see above). You can make your request in one of three ways:

  • For refill requests
    • Call your pharmacy to submit a request for refill
  • For initial prescription requests
    • Log in and send your request through the patient portal
    • Call the Austin Gastro office you normally visit

No refills are issued during the evenings, weekends, or holidays. It is helpful to anticipate your refill needs to avoid an interruption in your medication therapy.
