Colonoscopies are an essential medical procedure that plays a pivotal role in the prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer. They are considered the gold standard in the detection and prevention of colorectal cancer. The procedure involves using a small, flexible tube equipped with a camera, known as a colonoscope, through which doctors can thoroughly examine the inner lining of your large intestine, leaving no area unchecked.
More than just a diagnostic tool, colonoscopies also serve as a preventive function, allowing doctors to remove polyps (small growths that could evolve into cancer) during the procedure itself. Colonoscopies are recognized as the gold standard in colon cancer screening due to their high accuracy rate.

Our doctors and the experts at the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommend receiving regular colorectal cancer screenings starting at age 45 or younger if there is a history of colorectal cancer within your family. Colonoscopy FAQs
When should I get a colonoscopy?
Our physicians recommend individuals start getting regular screenings for colorectal cancer via colonoscopy beginning at the age of 45, or younger if the patient has a family history of colorectal cancer. If you have a family history, the American Cancer Society recommends receiving regular screenings 10 years prior to the age your closest relative was when diagnosed with colorectal cancer. For example, if your mother was diagnosed at 45 years old, you should begin your regular screenings at age 35.
How do I prepare for my colonoscopy?
To prepare for your colonoscopy, it is important to flush out the colon entirely. To do this, your physician will ask that you be on a clear liquid diet for at least one day prior to your procedure. Your doctor will also provide you with a liquid solution to drink called “prep,” which will further facilitate prepping your colon. Your provider will be happy to provide you with a detailed list of instructions to follow when preparing for your procedure prior to your appointment time.
What can I expect during my colonoscopy?
On the day of your procedure, we ask that you wear comfortable clothing that is easy to remove and put back on. Our expert physicians and anesthesiologists will speak with you first and determine if you are a suitable candidate for deep sedation. After reviewing your medical history and deeming you safe for deep sedation, you will be asked to lie on your side while the anesthetic is administered.
Once asleep, your gastroenterologist will insert a colonoscope – a thin, flexible tube equipped with a tiny camera – into the rectum to visually examine your rectum and colon. This tool, along with other cutting-edge technologies, allows your provider to detect any polyps or abnormalities that may lie within your colon.
Once you wake from your procedure, you may feel slight discomfort or have the feeling of having gas. This is normal and will subside over time.
How long does a colonoscopy take?
Your colonoscopy appointment should take approximately two hours to complete, from check-in to check-out. The procedure itself, however, typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete. We recommend patients ensure they have plenty of time following their procedure to rest and recover.
What can I expect after my colonoscopy?
Immediately following your colonoscopy, your gastroenterologist will share their findings with you. If polyps were found and samples of those polyps were taken for biopsy, you should typically hear back from us with your results in about two weeks. Your physician will also provide you with specific instructions to follow after your procedure, if needed.
Because of the deep sedation required for your procedure, we ask that you plan to have a friend, family member, or loved one take you home from our office and ensure you are well taken care of for the rest of the day.
Can I choose the physician who performs my colonoscopy?
Yes, you can choose your preferred physician to perform this procedure. We understand that a colonoscopy is a sensitive procedure to undergo. For that reason, we want all our patients to be as comfortable as possible throughout their treatment process. When filling out your questionnaire, you can let us know who you prefer to perform your colonoscopy.
