Activity Description

GI Update for Primary Care is a one-day continuing medical education (CME) activity hosted by Austin Gastroenterology and designed for primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. The course consists of focused 20-minute, evidence-based presentations delivered by board-certified gastroenterologists.

This educational activity addresses common gastrointestinal conditions frequently encountered in the primary care setting, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea, constipation, diverticular disease, anorectal disorders, metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and gallstone disease.

The curriculum emphasizes practical, guideline-driven approaches to diagnosis, initial management, and longitudinal care, with particular focus on identifying red flag symptoms, appropriate use of diagnostic testing, lifestyle and pharmacologic treatment strategies, and criteria for timely referral to gastroenterology. Content is designed to bridge gaps between current evidence-based recommendations and real-world clinical decision-making in primary care.

Upon completion of this activity, learners will be better equipped to manage common GI conditions efficiently within their practice, improve patient outcomes through early recognition and appropriate intervention, and collaborate effectively with gastroenterology specialists when advanced evaluation or treatment is indicated.
