Fortune Unegbu, MD

Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist
Board Certified in Internal Medicine

Meet Dr. Fortune Unegbu

Raised in the Austin area, Dr. Fortune Unegbu has deep roots in Central Texas. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin, followed by a Master’s in Medical Sciences from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth. He went on to attend medical school at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso, completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Arizona in Tucson, and pursued his gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.

Dr. Unegbu was drawn to gastroenterology because of the specialty’s ability to make an immediate and meaningful difference in patients’ lives—whether treating urgent conditions like gastrointestinal bleeding or food impactions or helping patients recover quickly after procedures. He is also passionate about the field’s vital role in colon cancer prevention through colonoscopy, as well as its unique ability to manage complex gastrointestinal conditions through a blend of medical therapy, endoscopic procedures, and multidisciplinary care.

His clinical interests include inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), eosinophilic esophagitis, esophageal strictures, motility disorders, cirrhosis and liver disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, and abdominal pain.

Patients can expect an in-depth discussion about their symptoms, a focused and thorough examination, and a clear conversation about diagnoses or potential diagnoses. If additional testing is needed, Dr. Unegbu ensures patients understand the purpose and process. He also emphasizes shared decision-making, always encouraging patients to ask questions and take an active role in their care plan.

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Unegbu enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking, and watching sports.
