Meet Mary Evelyn Schuwerk

Mary Evelyn Schuwerk is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners. She is on the Board of Directors for the Central Texas PA Society, and is also a member of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Advanced Practice Providers and the Texas Academy of Physician Assistants. She is drawn to gastroenterology for the system’s complex pathophysiology. She enjoys connecting with her patients and helping them find simple yet profound resolutions for improving their quality of life.

Before pursuing her physician assistant (PA) education at Pacific University in the Portland, Oregon area, Mary earned a master of public health (MPH) from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston. During her academic journey, she served as an advisory member of the Governor of Texas on the Texas Bleeding Disorders Advisory Council, aimed at shaping policy recommendations to expand access to quality care for individuals living with bleeding disorders across the state. After obtaining her MPH in 2008, she moved to Spain for a year to learn Spanish.

Mary obtained her bachelor of arts from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. During her college years, she competed and ranked nationally in women’s collegiate powerlifting.

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, she is a proud mother of a precious toddler and dog mom to a Shih Tzu-Maltese named Bo. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, hiking, playing tennis, paddle boarding, and trying new restaurants.
